Weekends : Copenhagen Christmas Markets

This weekend Niks and I are off to brave the cold in Copenhagen.
If the world famous Tivoli Christmas market doesn't get us into the Christmas spirt then the special Christmas brew certainly would.

The Little Mermaid
The sculptor Edward Eriksen, sculptured her in bronze and his wife Eline Eriksen modelled. The story says that she is a sea king's half-human and half-fish daughter, who must wait on her rock for 300 years before she can enter the world of humans. She's been sitting here since 1913 so she still has a few more years to go.

From a small fishing village that hardly anyone had ever heard of to a position as the dazzling capital of the Danish Empire and to its current position as one of the world's most talked about as well as sung of cities is a colourful history.

Our trip to Copenhagen started with us handing over one shoe in return for a grass slipper and a litre of Christmas brew beer! our shoe was then hoisted into the rafters in a basket so we could not run away with their fancy glasses... anyhow after two more beers, shot of schnapps and an Irish coffee we stumbled back to our hotel at 1 in the morning.

Needless to say we felt a little jaded in the morning but we soon walked that off around all the great shopping. We both managed to buy some clothes and Niks finally found the gloves she has been searching for for years.
More shopping followed lunch and then we finished off the afternoon with some coffee and traditional Christmas cake.

That evening we spent 5 hours meandering around the market and fairground... I have now seen my fare share of Santa Claus trinkets for the year! We also had a great dinner with me opting for the Christmas Buffet so I duly proceeded to over eat on herrings, pork and ris-ala-mande!

Yesterday we spent the day sight-seeing and got down to see the little mermaid and a palace or two. We finished off with another great lunch at a small cafe and then more shopping before we jetted back home.

All in all it was a fun weekend getaway and well worth it just for the beers on the first night!
