We had been to Los Roques before and spent the days negotiating with local fisherman to get us to the flats and spent the hot nights clearing sand out our sleeping bags or hiding from sand flies!

Mont Blanc

June 2005 and Andrew and I travelled to Chamonix with the intention of climbing to the summit of the Mont Blanc massif (4810m) on the French / Italian border. In order to accomplish this we had hired the services of Chamonix Guiding in order to teach us how to navigate crevass fields and walk with crampons and ice axes without impaling ourselves!

Sardinia, an island region of Italy, sits just south of the Island of Corsica in the blue Tyrrhenian Sea was our destination and although it's 160 miles long, 68 miles wide we planned to spend most of it on a patch of beach 20m long and 5m wide!

The Cape Epic

It all started on the 28 February in Knysna. Matt, my biking buddy, and I woke up at 5am and climbed onto our bikes. 52 grueling hours later, covering more than 820km and climbing well over 11000 meters we arrived at Spier Wine Estate in Stellenbosch. I was 5kgs lighter and feeling older and pretty fatigued.

We arrived at Nice - Cote D' Azur Terminal 1 - on Saturday morning (3 May 2003) and took the shuttle bus to the Avis car hire desk where we were pleasantly surprised with an upgrade to a C200 Diesel Mercedes from our original booking of a Renault Megane. This was "The French Riviera" after all and was all about style....
